Shostakovitch’s Viola
Sonata was written just before his death, inspiring Khachaturian to write his
Solo Sonata just months later. Bacewicz’ last published work was a viola
concerto, and Martinu returned to the viola
near the end of his life. The music on this CD are profound works, possibly
among the most moving pieces ever written by these composers.
