Shostakovitch’s Viola Sonata was written just before his death, inspiring
Khachaturian to write his Solo Sonata just months later. Bacewicz’ last
published work was a viola concerto, and Martinu returned to the viola near the
end of his life. The music on this CD are profound works, possibly among the
most moving pieces ever written by these composers.
Paul Cortese has been principal viola with the Gothenburg Symphony with Neeme
Jarvi conducting. He has been guest principal in over a dozen European orchestras
and is featured chamber player in numerous worldwide festivals. This is his
third CD on Crystal Records. The American Record Guide said his “performances are elegant. The technique of Cortese is
superb.”

Carol Rodland is Viola Professor at the Eastman School of Music and is an
international soloist. Catherine Rodland is artist-in-residence at St. Olaf
College and also concertizes throughout the U.S. and Canada. The unusual
combination of viola and organ is shown to great advantage in these premiere
recordings. “...an awesome combination, when the instruments [are viola and
organ] and the music, as it is in each piece on this recital, is noble in
intent. The Rodland sisters play with charisma and style.” Gramophone.
